Thinking of seeing an affordable Chiropractor? How do you get the best bang for your buck?
Chiropractic visits can be costly in Australia. That’s because Medicare doesn’t bulk bill Chiropractic the same way as GP visits.
In this article, I’ll share how to maximise your Chiropractic care while keeping your expenses at a minimum.
Medicare Plan (affordable Chiropractor tip #1)
I can already hear you saying: “Wait a minute, I thought you said Medicare doesn’t bulk bill Chiropractic?”.
Not quite! But if you have a chronic condition, you may be able to receive up to 5 subsidised Chiropractic visits from Medicare (per calendar year).
Some Chiropractors will charge a gap payment for these 5 subsidised sessions. For example, our clinic (You Chiropractic) has a $30 gap for each subsidised appointment. Our full fee is $85 per appointment, so Medicare covers $55 for you.
What happens after you’ve used all 5 Medicare visits? Well, you can choose to continue your Chiropractic care at your clinic’s full fee. Alternatively, you may wait until next year for another Medicare plan.
Here’s how you do it:
- See your GP
- Request a Chiropractic care plan
- Bring GP’s referral to Chiropractor Adelaide
- Enjoy 5 subsidised Chiropractic sessions
Private Health Insurance (extras cover)
BUPA, HCF, Medibank (different from Medicare), NIB & HBF are all examples of private health insurance in Australia.
There are 2 aspects of private health insurance:
- Hospital cover: e.g. hospital accommodation for various medical conditions
- Extras cover: e.g. dentist, glasses, contact lenses & Chiropractor
Naturally, the more you pay your insurance provider, the more goodies you get. However, always keep in mind there’s a limit to how much you can claim back.
My experience with patients has shown that extras cover is only worthwhile if you plan to spend on 3 or more modalities (e.g. dentist, optometrist & Chiropractor).
If you only want to spend on Chiropractic (1 modality), it’s better to pay the full fee and forget about extras cover. You will likely save money in the long run.
If you want to keep your joints happy, there’s a good chance you’ll need more than 1 Chiropractic adjustment.
During your 1st appointment, your Chiropractor will assess the health of your joints. The better the condition of your joints, the less sessions you will need for recovery.
Some Chiropractic clinics offer pre-paid packages. This means you pay upfront for a few appointments and you get a better rate.
For example, $85 per appointment is our clinic’s full fee. Some of our patients choose to pay $390 upfront for 6 appointments, so they save $120.
Some helpful tips:
- More than 12 pre-paid visits: Under Australian regulations, you can only pre-pay up to 12 Chiropractic visits at a time
- Consider your own situation: Pre-paid packages are only there to help you if you need multiple appointments
Just like investing, the younger you start the larger your returns will tend to be. Ideally, you want to start “investing” in the happiness of your joints under the age of 25.
To encourage this, some Chiropractic clinics offer age-based concessions.
You Chiropractic has 2 concession types:
- Aged 25 & below
- 65 & above
Each appointment is $10 less ($85 full fee, $75 with age-based concession).
You wouldn’t wait until you’re 50 years old before keeping your teeth happy (brushing, flossing, dental cleanups, etc.). Neither should you wait until you’re older before keeping your joints happy.
How to Find an Affordable Chiropractor?
Look for Chiropractic clinics that are transparent with their fee structure from the get go.
It may not be a good sign if:
- It’s not easy for you to find the clinic’s fee information (e.g. on their website)
- The clinic is secretive about their fees BEFORE you make your 1st Chiropractic appointment
It’s true that you get what you pay for, but there’s nothing wrong with doing your research to find an affordable Chiropractor Adelaide.
